Character Counter
Count characters with and without spaces.
Live character, word, and byte counts
Against common limits
How to use it
- 1Paste or type your text into the box.
- 2Read the character, word, and byte counts as you type.
- 3Check the platform limit bars (X posts, SMS, meta descriptions, and more) to see what you're still under or have gone over.
Supported formats & limits
No character limit — works with anything from a sentence to a full document.
Example
As you type, the bars below the count show how much room you have left against common limits — an X/Twitter post (280), a single SMS segment (160, or 70 the moment you add an emoji or other non-basic character), and a few others — turning red once you go over.
How it works
Every character you type — letters, numbers, punctuation, and spaces — is counted directly from the text box, with a second count that excludes whitespace, a word count, and the size in UTF-8 bytes. Counting is Unicode-aware, so multi-byte characters like emoji count as one character rather than two. The platform limits are the commonly cited maximums for each format as of today; the SMS limit specifically adapts based on whether your text still fits the 160-character GSM alphabet or has switched to the 70-character Unicode one.
